REPETITION OF ARTICLES
Repetition of
Articles plays an important role to the meaning of a sentence. Go through the
following notes along with examples.
1.
I
have a black and white dog. This sentence means that I have a dog that is
partly black and partly white. Now examine this sentence, I HAVE A BLACK AND
WHITE DOG. This sentence means I have two dogs, out of them one black and
another is white. Do you see that mere repetition of article before white has
created such vast difference in meaning?
Must keep in mind that when two or more
adjectives qualify the same noun, the article is placed before the first adjective
only; but when they qualify different nouns the article is used before each
adjective.
2.
See
the sentences below
a.
The captain and wicket keeper is not in practice
today.
b.
The captain and the wicket keeper are not
present today.
The first
sentence clearly indicates that the post of the captain and wicketkeeper are
held by the same person; but the repetition of article in the second sentence
indicates that the two posts are held by two different persons.
Must keep in
mind that when two or more connected nouns refer to the same person or thing,
the Article is used before the first noun only; but when two nouns refer to
different persons or things, the article is used before each.
Examine the following sentences; try to understand the
differences between them.
a.
The secretary and the treasurer did not attend
the meeting.
b.
The secretary and treasurer did not attend the
meeting.
3.
In
some cases repetition of articles does not create any differences.
We may either
say:- a. The third and the fourth
chapter of the English book.
Or b. The third and fourth chapter of the English
book.
There is no difference in meaning between
these two sentences
4.
While
expressing a comparison, if two nouns refer to the same person or thing, the
article is used before the first noun only.
He is better
mechanic than clerk.
She is better
poetess than novelist.
He is a better
thinker than orator.]
He would make a
better lawyer than doctor.
But in case they refer to different persons
or things, the article must be used before each.
He is a better
mechanic than a clerk.
He would make a
better statesman than a philosopher.
