ADJECTIVES: DEGREES OF COMPARISON

In this lesson today we are going to discuss about various degrees of comparison of adjectives of quality. This chapter will cover:  Comparison of adjectives for kids, Degrees of comparison and much more. Lets begin:-

See the underlined words in the following sentences.
i.                    Peter is tall.
ii.                  Paul is taller.
iii.                Gilchrist is the tallest

In the first sentence the underlined word  ‘tall’, that is an adjective, merely tells us that somebody called Peter has the quality of tallness.
In the second sentence the underlined word ‘taller’ tells us that Paul’s tallness is more than that of Peter, mentioned in the first sentence.
In the third sentence, the underlined word ‘tallest’ tells that all the three persons, Peter , Paul and Gilchrist have the quality of tallness and Gilchrist has the highest amount of that quality.

So, we can say that adjectives of quality change in form [tall, taller, tallest] to show comparison. They are called the degrees of comparison.

There are three degrees of comparison; Positive degree, comparative degree and superlative degree. In the above examples; tall is positive degree, taller is comparative degree and tallest is superlative degree

The positive degree of an adjective is the adjective itself in it’s simplest form. It is used to denote the existence of a quality in some noun. A positive degree is used when there is no sense of comparison.
§  Examples:     Veena is a good singer.
o   Ravana was a horrible demon.
o   This is a pleasant sight.

The comparative degree of an adjective denotes a higher degree of existence of some quality in a noun than the existence of the same quality displayed by the positive degree of the adjective.

Examples: Hari is stronger than Abhay.
Which of these two bags is cheaper?
Walnut is costlier than ground nuts.

The superlative degree of an adjective denotes the highest degree of that quality., and used when more than two things ure under comparison.

Examples: Alice is the nicest girl in our locality.
Robin is the laziest among all the children in this class.
Cheetah is the fastest land animal.
