We said an adjective is a describing word that describes a noun in many ways. An adjective can tell us the quality of a noun; such as in healthy baby the word healthy is telling us the quality of the noun that is baby. An adjective can tell us the number of a noun, such as in five girls, the adjective five  is telling us the number of the noun girl, an adjective can tell us the quantity of a noun such as in the phrase no sense , the adjective no is telling us the quantity of the noun sense; and many more. Just know that an adjective is a word that describes a noun somehow.

Today our topic is kinds of adjectives.

1.    Adjectives of Quality: An adjective of quality shows us the kind or quality of a person or thing.
Delhi is a big city.
Neha is a beautiful girl.
Bajrang is a strong boy.
The old car was sold.
All the underlined adjectives are adjectives of quality.
2.    Adjective of quantity: An adjective of quantity tells how much a thing is meant..
She had no knowledge about this incident.
Show some evidence that you are innocent.
He hadn’t any idea.
A lot of risk is involved in the whole rescue operation.

All the underlined adjectives above are adjectives of quantity.

3.    Adjective of number or numeral Adjectives. These adjectives show how many persons or things are meant.
A hand has five fingers
A dog has four legs.
There are many stars in the sky.
He is the first boy of his class.
There are twenty baskets in the cart.
Find out the next step.
Most kids like watching cartoons.
All the underlined adjectives above are adjectives of numbers.

·       Some adjectives show definite numbers such as five, four and twenty from the above examples. Since five or four is cardinal number, They are called , “Definite Cardinal Numeral adjectives.”
·       Some adjectives show number but they are not definite, such as many and most from the above examples. They are called, “Indefinite Numeral adjectives.”
·       Some adjectives show the number of a person or thing in an order, such as first and next from the above examples. Since first or next are ordinal in nature, They are called “Ordinal Definite Numeral Adjectives.”

4.    Demonstrative Adjectives: Demonstrating means pointing out which person or thing is beng talked about. It involves somekinds of body gesture like pointing with finger or eye movements or something like that.
That tower is of Airtel.

These mangoes are of my friend’s garden.
Those travelers are from Viena.

·       Please Note that there are only two demonstrative adjectives which are this and that and their plural are these and those respectively. This and That are only adjectives in the entire English language which can be transfoemed into plural.

5.    Interrogative adjective: An interrogative adjective is is a question word like ‘what’, ‘which’ etc, functioning as an adjective. These adjectives always form a question.
What sort of help you ask for?
Which method did you adopt to solve this problem?
The underlined words above are examples of Interrogative adjectives.
These are Interrogative adjectives.

·       Please Note that same adjective may classed as of quantity or numbers depending whether the noun that is countable or uncountable.
For instance, If we say, “Some mangoes” , Here Some is adjective of quantity because mango is a countable noun. Now if we say some milk, here some is an adjective of quantity because milk is an uncountable noun.

Emphasizing Adjectives

I have seen him lifting 200 kilogram with my own eyes.
Please mind your own business.
I am my own master.
Please note the use of “own” in all the above sentences, and think if there were no own, what differences there might have been in the expressional ground.

Now look these sentences.
I myself had posted the letter. Don’t know why it didn’t reach destination.
He himself caused his defeat by batting first in the bowling pitch even after winning the toss.
She herself told her father that she loved Ishan and wanted to marry him.

Examine the underlined words, myself, himself and herself. and think if they were not there,  what differences there might have been in the expressional ground.

The difference is when these words are absent; the expressions are normal, general, common etc. But when they are there, the expression is emphasized. Therefore, they are Emphasized Adjectives.

Now look at the following sentences and the underlined words..

What an idea sir Ji!
What a shot!
What a lie!
In all the sentences above, WHAT is representing an exclamation, thus it’s exclamatory adjective in all these three examples given above.
