VERB

Every sentence deals with at least one action, and that action is expressed through the verb inside the sentence. A verb is a word that tells or asserts something about a person or thing. Verb comes from Latin ‘VERBUM’, meaning something having the highest importance. It must be noted that a sentence can be formed without a noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, interjection or determiner; but no sentence can be formed without a verb inside it.

A verb may tell us:

i.                   What a person or thing does, as in

a.     I eat

b.     Peter plays.

c.      The sun rises.

d.     A teacher teaches.

ii.                 What is done to a person or thing, as in

a.     She was awarded.

b.     The thief was arrested.

c.      His deed was condemned.

d.     He was allowed.

iii.              What a person or thing is, as in

a.     The weather is very cold today.

b.     The glass is opaque.

c.      I am happy.

d.     My mother is angry.

Must keep in mind that a VERB is a word that is used to tell or assert something about some person or thing’s actions.

It must be noted that a verb often consists of more than one word; as in

a.     The girls were singing.

b.     The ship has reached Philipinies.

c.      The pilgrim was lost on his way back.

d.     My mother did not know about it.
